What is the Data Observatory?
We are the UK's first dedicated think tank for health and social care data and analytics. As a Community Interest Company, we connect leaders, innovators, and changemakers to turn data insights into real-world solutions. We don't hold data or write dusty reports; we are a movement focused on making things happen for social good.
Why do we need the Data Observatory now?

Health and social care has world-class expertise and brilliant initiatives, but progress is stalled by fragmentation and duplication. The NHS 10-year plan demands data-driven transformation and AI integration, yet there is no platform connecting and scaling what already works. We bridge the gap between vision and reality, helping the system move from talking about data to actually using it to transform lives.

Unlike commercial firms that deliver closed solutions with little system-wide benefit, we make everything open source. Built from frontline experience, we are agile enough to respond in weeks not months, and we sit across health, social care, academia, and industry enabling true ecosystem thinking.

How do you ensure real-world impact?
Every service we offer is actionable by design, reducing friction between insights, implementation, and evaluation. All our work, code, and methods are publicly available and properly evaluated, ensuring knowledge benefits the whole system. We understand procurement, information governance, and operational pressures because we have lived them. We don't just identify problems; we help you solve them with practical and sustainable solutions.
Who is behind the Data Observatory?
We are founded by leaders who have delivered national data strategies, secured research funding, and advised DHSC, NHS England, and leading think tanks. Our work has shaped national policy and frontline services. We deliver all our activities in partnership with the NHS Chief Data and Analytical Officer Network (CDAON) — experts who live and breathe the realities of data leadership every day, bringing decades of combined health and social care experience.
